One of the signs of an advanced civilization is in the honoring of the dead. The first people on Earth honored their dead by burying them under rocks and laying our flowers and other offerings. Seafaring cultures would build small boats to house the dead and would burn and let it sail to the afterlife. This I think is the history of cremation. Nowadays, people keep the cremated remains in an urn. The most popular urns are wood cremation urns, ceramic urns or metal urns.
Housing for the departed varies in different cultures. Ancient civilizations built temples for their leaders This can be in the form of pyramids, temples and basilicas. Lay people would just bury their dead or house them in crypts. Some Buddhist would just leave their dead in nature to be consumed by animals. Cremation, as it is known and practiced today, is relatively new. Worldwide, only a few would want to be cremated after death. In spite of the low preference for cremation, the trend right now is on the upside. Younger people of modern civilization today want to get cremated. Most want their remains to be scattered somewhere, others want to be kept in wood cremation urns.
