There are several ways to direct the horse’ movements when riding. One of them is by use of spurs. These are worn on the boots of the rider to guide the horse to move forward or laterally. They are typically made of metals or metal alloys. They are both functional and decorative.
There are three parts of simple spurs. First is the heel band or yoke which wraps around the heel of the boot. Second is the rowel which is a small revolving wheel with radiating points attached to the shank. Finally, there is the shank or neck which is the area that touches the horse. This extends from back to the heel band.
