Aim for you and your dog to have fun even while you compete with other dog handlers and their pets. Learn to communicate well with your dog so you could forge a strong bond of trust and control. Remember that training is not just about being able to do tricks well. Good communication should be a way of life between you and your pooch.
When joining canine agility competitions, take the opportunity to talk to other handlers, breeders and groomers. You can learn many things as dog show people are usually very enthusiastic to talk to fellow dog lovers. Just make sure you always ask permission before petting any dog. You will also have a chance to purchase a lot of fun things for your dogs from the many vendors that will be there.
