If your dog is constantly scratching, biting or licking his fur, he might be suffering from some kind of bacterial or fungal infection. This can cause an itchy, flaky condition in his skin. Dog dry skin can have more serious effects such as fur loss and a disrupted quality of life. It can even cause the dog lack of sleep. In more severe cases too much scratching can result in abrasions or hot spots.

There are chemical treatments for dog dry skin, but proper grooming will help a lot in preventing it from happening to your pet. Brushing your dog daily will remove pollens, grasses, and other outdoor irritants. It will also stimulate the skin’s circulation and prevent matting. Brush carefully taking care not to tug on tangles. Use a soft bristle brush on sensitive areas. Bathing should be done on a regular basis. Be careful with the soap and shampoo that you use on your dog. They can sometimes be sources of irritants themselves.
