A dog with acute moist dermatitis has areas of its skin that are inflamed and infected. These dog hot spots are usually itchy, red, and swollen, and spread quickly because of licking and scratching. Needless to say, they can cause your pet considerable pain and discomfort. But canine hot spots can be treated. Just follow these simple steps:
~Trim or shave the area around a hot spot to dry out the moisture and hasten the healing process.
~Clean the area with a mild cleanser or shampoo for dogs.
~Rinse with cold water then pat dry with a clean towel.
~Apply hydrocortisone spray to prevent itching. If unsure what to use consult a veterinarian.
~Place an Elizabethan collar or plastic cone on your dog’s neck to keep him from licking and scratching the hot spots.
~Monitor the wounds to see if they are healing. If they’re getting worse, take your pet to the vet immediately.
