A purse dog refers to a number of small dogs that are small enough to fit in purse sized carrying cases. These dogs are very popular and you can often see young celebrities carrying their toy sized dogs during red carpet events or just for a night out in the town. A dog carrier backpack can also be used to carry these small dogs around. Usually, these dogs are specific breeds and weigh no more than five pounds. A few dog breeds fall naturally into this category, and may exceed the five pound weight.
While a purse dog may look cute, there are some inherent problems with breeding a dog to be small, specifically as a fashion accessory. Bladder control will always be an issue for most of these dogs since they have tiny bladders that are not designed to hold liquid for long. Dog owners often wonder how many times a purse has to be replaced if a dog is carried around for long parties or events and forgotten to be given ample time to answer the call of nature.
