scratching posts

I’ve never had pets when I was growing up because my sister was allergic to them. When my college roommate adopted a cat, I learned how to live with a cat. At first I couldn’t figure out why her cat loved scratching our walls, cabinets and bed posts. My friend told me that cats needed to scratch; it’s their way of exercising. Unlike dogs, they don’t need to run, they need to scratch. Just last week I saw scratching posts at the home store, I suddenly remembered my college roommate. I wish we had gotten a scratching post back then.

There are many types of scratching posts, the best ones look and feel like a real tree. Just like we buy trees for Christmas, a scratching post can take the place of a real tree. Some scratching posts are wrapped in different fabrics that may be softer on the cat’s claws. Some scratching posts have corrugated boxes; the surface of the corrugate box is also an alternative for cats. Some scratching posts are vertically aligned so that the cat can exercise his or her legs as well as he or she stands while scratching. Some posts however are horizontal so the cats can scratch anytime even while relaxing.
