There are many different kinds of bird mixes. The danger in some commercial bird food is in the excessive levels of fat. It results in low water intake because water is a by-product of fat metabolism. High fat intake results in small compact stool. In the wild, parrots eat mostly herbivorous diet, consisting mostly of grasses and other plants.

Along with seeds, they should eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. They also enjoy helpings of healthy human foods like grains and beans. Small servings of chicken or fish may also be given, Never let them eat foods such as chocolates, avocadoes or coffee. The correct balance of calories in the diet versus the needs for energy and growth is important.
